JOSH SNYDER ANNUAL MEMORIAL ICE FISHING DERBY

THE STORY

Our inspiration began with Josh, our son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. At a very young age, Josh was special. His laugh – deep and hearty, sometimes sly and playful, his eyes – bright and curious, his heart – tender yet strong, his will – tenacious, his spirit – proud, his intentions – always honest. Josh was introduced to fishing by his Dad and his Mom at an early age. He fished every day he could especially in the brook that runs along his yard. Fishing would become Josh’s serenity, a place to go and just be if he needed to work things out in his young life.

As Josh grew older, he played team sports: baseball, football, and basketball. His drive to be the best was admired. In high school he was popular as a skilled athlete but more importantly as a friend. He cared about his peers, loved his family and close friends. He made his parents nuts with his cars and trucks with great music systems. He enjoyed getting together with people, always making new friends with that great smile and genuine personality.

We lost Josh in a tragic accident in May, 2002. Out of our grief came the idea of organizing an ice fishing derby in Josh’s memory – at night, when the lake glows from the stars and moon in the crisp winter air. A derby like no other, at the end of the ice fishing day, a home-cooked meal and fun – cash prizes for the biggest catch, raffles and drawings, and most of all good cheer.

Our crew gathered back then with each of us having a unique relationship with Josh. The Derby has kept us connected, we’ve grown into a family, including six junior members of our original crew! (And another on the way!) The Derby has brought our community together to give back to the high school that Josh loved with an educational scholarship, and to some members of our community who have suffered dire life altering circumstances. We have continued our journey with Josh as our guide and inspiration.

Join us in February – the Derby crew and our families and friends – for an evening of ice fishing and family fun that you’ll never forget!

See you on the ice, Josh.
